Vision Pro Glasses for Developers
Apple has today released the second beta version of visionOS, the software that will run on the future Vision Pro glasses. The first beta version was released in June and has been available to developers for experimentation for a month.
Currently, developers do not have access to Vision Pro glasses, making it impossible to conduct tests on an actual Apple device. However, the SDK can currently be accessed virtually through the latest Xcode beta.
Apple plans to provide selected developers with Vision Pro glasses for app development in the coming weeks. Yesterday, Apple began accepting applications from developers who want to receive a development kit. Apple will provide developers with Vision Pro "loaner" glasses that can be used for app development and testing. The glasses must be returned to Apple at a specific time, and developers are instructed to securely store the glasses when not in use.
App development must take place in a private, secure workspace accessible only to developers authorized to work with the Vision Pro glasses. This is presumably to prevent further details about the glasses from leaking. Registered developers can apply for a test kit on the Apple website.
Apple plans to review each application, giving priority to applicants who develop apps that benefit from the features and capabilities of visionOS. The Vision Pro glasses are expected to be released in early 2024, giving developers six to nine months to work on apps.
