Apple is accepting applications for iPhone Security Research Device Program 2024
- Apple is now accepting applications for its 2024 iPhone Security Research Device Program, providing security researchers with specialized Apple devices, making it easier to locate critical iOS vulnerabilities.
- The iPhone Security Research Device Program (SRDP) has been around since 2019, and through it, researchers have found 130 high-impact security loopholes.
- Apple has gifted more than 100 reports from SRDP researchers with bounties, with "several awards" reaching up to $500,000.
Apple and its Mission for Greater Security
Because safety has now become a mishmash of corporate competition and societal necessity, Apple has announced it is now accepting applications for its 2024 iPhone Security Research Device Program. This permits security researchers to uncover intricate iOS vulnerabilities using specialized Apple devices.
The iPhone Security Research Device Program: A Success Story
The SRDP, buzzing around since 2019, has already helped researchers expose 130 hardcore security gaps. These findings have assisted Apple in implementing "novel mitigations" for securing iOS devices. Over the past six months, program participants have earned 37 CVE credits for their findings, contributing to the improvement of the XNU kernel, kernel extensions, and XPC services.
Welcome to the Club: The SRDP and its Rewards
Through their participation in the SRDP, researchers also qualify for Apple's security bounty distribution. Not only has Apple reviewed more than 100 reports from SRDP researchers, but with pride, it reports that "multiple awards" have hit the not to be scoffed at $500,000 mark, with the average award brushing pretty close to $18,000.
Special Devices for Special Researchers
The iPhone 14 Pro research devices handed out to participants come with distinctive hardware and software features for security research. Researchers can configure or disable iOS security measures in ways that aren't possible on a standard iPhone.
Who Gets to Enjoy these Research Devices?
The research devices are available to security researchers with a proven track record of conducting security research on the iPhone and other platforms. Additionally, Apple supplies the devices to university lecturers wanting to use them as teaching tools for computer science students.
Applications Open Until October 2023
Each year Apple selects a limited number of participants to receive a research device. Applications can be submitted until October 31, 2023. Those selected will be notified at the start of 2024.
Apple is once again making enormous strides to enhance the security of its products. Their annual iPhone Security Research Device Program is a unique opportunity for security researchers and university lecturers to contribute to the safety of iOS devices while earning attractive bounties.
